Stop Sign: Safety Device on the Road

The stop sign is a red and white octagonal signs have the  word "STOP" written in large letters. As one of the most common traffic signals on the road, stop signs work to help control traffic and give pedestrians the right of way.  As an essential safety device on the roads, stop signs are needed to help with the flow of traffic.

If used properly, they prevent accidents and injuries at intersections where there are no traffic lights or visibility is limited. How do you use a stop sign properly? When you approach a stop sign, you must come to a complete stop behind the white line and not in the crosswalk. Then,  yield the right-of-way to all other traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, before crossing the intersection.  Always look both ways and listen for traffic before proceeding to go through an intersection.

Stop signs also help pedestrians safely cross the street by allowing them to get the right of way. While it may be frustrating to encounter a stop sign when you would rather keep going, they are imperative to keeping our roads safe. After all, failing to stop at a stop sign could result in a traffic ticket and a fine. If that happens to you, completing traffic school online (with the court's approval) can help keep the point off your record. Sign up for Traffic School Quick today to keep your record clean!
